ACTIVITIES IN THE REGION
WILDLIFE SPOTTING

The Mariazell region is home to diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds, deer or other animals that inhabit the area. Binoculars can enhance your wildlife spotting experience.
A SMALL SELECTION OF OUR WILD ANIMALS:
- Deer and Roe Deer: Deer species, including red deer and roe deer, are commonly found in the forests and meadows around Mariazell. They are most active during dawn and dusk, so early morning or late afternoon hikes may increase your chances of spotting them.
- Chamois: Chamois, a type of mountain goat-antelope, can be found in the higher elevations of the Austrian Alps. They are agile climbers and are often seen on steep slopes and rocky terrain. Consider exploring hiking trails or viewpoints in the alpine regions for a chance to spot chamois.
- Birds: The Mariazell region is home to a variety of bird species, including raptors like golden eagles, buzzards, and falcons. Look for birds near open fields, forests, and bodies of water.
- Small Mammals: Keep an eye out for smaller mammals such as squirrels, foxes, hares, and hedgehogs. These creatures can be found in wooded areas, meadows, and even inside small villages.
When wildlife spotting, it’s important to be respectful and considerate of the animals and their habitats. Move slowly and quietly, avoid sudden movements or loud noises, and keep a safe distance to prevent causing disturbance or stress to the animals.
